Shining and suggestive, unique for its crystalclear water and cliffs overlooking the sea, Polignano a Mare, tiny and old town, 80 km far from Villa Gioia, it is known as the “Pearl of Adriatic”. The captivating town sports multi-leveled whitewashed buildings jumbled up like stacked sugar cubes. The Arco della Vecchia Porta is the gateway to the historic center, where you’ll find a charming maze of arches, stairways, meandering pathways, little piazzas and stone-paved streets, alladorned with flowers or poetry, that will amaze you and will remain forever etched in your memory.
Nearby there are beautiful beaches and hidden coves that can be reached by boats.
The coast line offers several spectacular sight such as the Turquoise Cave, the Pigeons Cave, famous for the turquoise and emerald green colours of the seawaters, or the worldwide renowned Grotta Palazzese. Lots of tipical restaurants, built into caves such as the very famous Grotta Palazzesse Restaurant in the Palace Cave, give the town a magical, almost surreal quality.
North of Polignano, stop for a few minutes to observe the small beaches of Cala Paura and Cala Ponte up to the Abbey of San Vito. Dedicated to the patron saint of the city, this Benedictine abbey was built on the sea in the 10th century; solitary yet animated by a small fishing port, it has a melancholy and poetic aura that you will carry with you as a lasting gift from this wonderful land.
